Professional Skills

• Broadcast Journalist.  Anchor, writer, editor, interviewer, news manager.  Talk-journalist (inventor of the term), meaning to ad-lib live, observe an event or engage in a spontaneous conversation with a newsmaker/source, usually without benefit of hard copy reference materials.  Both radio and television.
• Marketing/Communications.  Advertising, merchandising, press & public relations, including graphic and layout designs, copy writing, radio and television production -- live and/or live to tape, music jingles, print production, and more -- inception to implementation.  Engaged contract services for market studies, high volume direct mail printing, and more.
• Application Software Skills -- digital audio editing, broadcast standard non-linear video editing using a proprietary system similar to Adobe Premier, Photoshop, PageMaker, Microsoft Word, Lotus 123 and Microsoft Excel, and several other lesser known applications.  Photography.  Studied early generation of advanced basic business programming language, which is conceptually useful today.

• Current, CBS/Infinity, 94.1fm, 92.5fm, and 98.7fm Tampa Bay, independently producing long form people, issues, and events radio, hOUR Tampa Bay, airing weekly.  1998-present.  (Tapes available.)
• Immediate past, Paxson Communications, radio and television, hOUR Tampa Bay, 94.1fm, 102.5fm, 101.5fm, am820, and News Radio 570am WHNZ, 15 hours live, plus 2 hours tape on air weekly, as well as WXTX TV Channel 66 local, and nominal host/production distributed to nearly 70 television stations, including all major markets, nationally.  1989-1999.
• Earlier Florida Period, 1973-1983.  am970 WFLA Radio, am570 WPLP, all news WQSA Sarasota, am620 WSUN.
• Root Experiences, broadcast career decision at age 5, first employed age 16.  First news anchoring experiences 1959-1973, Poughkeepsie and Kingston, New York local radio, 1966-1969 New York City holding editorial support positions for nationally known correspondents at NBC News.
• Communications, Public Relations, and Marketing, 1983-1989, corporate marketing and communications director for a Poughkeepsie, New York insurance business, and a real estate business (Marie Powell Better Homes and Gardens) serving most of the Florida West Coast.

• Vice President, Sigma Delta Chi, Society of Professional Journalists Florida West Coast Chapter.
• Tampa Bay Press Club, a charter member and among original key organizers.

• Pinellas County Coalition for the Homeless, Master of Ceremonies Annual Awards dinner and many media oriented projects.
• Communications Committee, Pinellas County United Way, hosting twice weekly television programs on WTSP TV Channel 10, featuring member agencies people, issues, and events.
• All Children's Hospital Telethon, 1989-2000.  Producing advance and follow up radio story material, along with other volunteer activities during the telethon.
• Pro-bono creative writing and hosting of radio and television programs for hundreds of organizations and thousands of community involved leaders.
• Invented name, "St. Pete Together", along with now deceased St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce president Paul Getting, for use in early 1990s efforts to bring the community together when St. Petersburg faced a threat of street violence.
• Produced audio portion of audio/photos presentation displayed on a wall of computer screens at the Florida Holocaust Museum.
• Produced countless stories, interviews benefiting the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
• Florida Prison Crusades, lay ministering to inmates on Death Row, Florida State Prison Starke.

• 1st Place 1998, in AiR, Achievement in Radio awards, major markets, best public affairs program, and best interviewer, sponsored by Ford Motor Company and March of Dimes.
• 2nd Place 1998 and 1999, Florida Associated Press Broadcasters Association, major markets, best community, issues, events oriented program in state.
• The Friendship Award, presented September 2000, by Friendship Trailbridge Committee, for my many live and taped stories that helped save the old Gandy Bridge.  hOUR Tampa Bay and It's My Town Tampa Bay, were the first broadcasts to give serious media attention to that cause.
• Scores of thank you letters of appreciation, certificates, and other recognition.
